Side 2 Lyrics

Back to Pound Town

Time after Time

If I had another you,

Could I tell her what to do?

Teach her all the things you knew.

Would it stop me wanting you?

Time after time you keep calling me back to you.

Time after time and you won’t give it up.

If all we did was just the same,

Every thing left as it came to us,

If we were bold and we would dare,

Could we change the way we were?

You’re asking me questions  when I don’t have answers,

Telling me things that I don’t understand.

But I know that you don’t need me now.

Farewell to St Kilda

Farewell to St Kilda, farewell to Broadway,
Elwood’s fine boulevard where I used to stay,
Your cakes, drive in grog shop and Thai takeaway,
For I’m far away now in England.

And I’m off now and gone, It didn’t take long,
Just long enough for to write you this song,
But when I hear Paul Kelly I’m singing along,
Far away now in England.

St Kilda

Saw a black man in St Kilda, left a tram in Ackland Street,
A stream across the pavement and a bottle at his feet.

And no-one seemed to see him, the most distinctive man around,
Leather face and ragged denim, grinning back to every frown.

Hitting black notes, only black notes, gaps between the lines,
Black notes, don’t look back notes, It’s not your time.

And I felt you leaving me to remember,
And I felt you leaving me to care.

Long before St Kilda, long before we even came,
Skeletons walking like ghost gums in the rain.
Mornington in Autumn, Philip Island in the dark.
There is fear across the ocean, And there are spiders in the park.

Spinning black notes, only black notes, gaps between the lines.
Black notes, only black notes, It’s not your time.

Spider caught the high ball, Kennett took the kicks.
Sometimes sorry makes it better, most things pity cannot fix.

Off and Away

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard this song sung badly,
Watched the song and singer slide to the floor.
You’re out there tonight. My heart in flight.
I don’t want to hear this music any more.

People here are getting loud now and friendly,
Drinking fit to beat the band to their knees.
Maybe half my age, some boy takes the stage,
Eyes closed. A bit of order now please.

And he’s off and gone on the breath of a song,
Riding the story his father came on.
Off and away. He’s almost gone.
Leaving the music to pull me along.

I can still hear every word that you told me,
Right before you climbed on the plane.
Now I hold up my hands. That’s who I am.
And I know that I would do the same things again.

I’m off and gone on the breath of a song,
Riding the story my father came on.
Off and away. Almost gone.
Only the music to pull me along.

Stop right now, Hold me in your arms.
Stop right now, Never let me go
I have loved you longer than the tide has flowed.

Sam the Monkey

I’m Sam the Monkey, I hang around.
Hear them cheer me around the ground.

I’m happy being what I want to be,
Happy just to do it for free,
I bang the drum and people come,
Hope they like what they see.

I’m Sam the Monkey, I hang around.
Hear them cheer me around the ground.

I’m happy being what I want to be,
Happy just to follow the team.
I wear a two-foot smile on my face,
But things are never quite what they seem.

I’m Sam the Monkey, I love a crowd,
Here they come now, getting loud.

One banana, two banana,
Three banana, four,
That’s all they ever throwed me,
Till they showed me the door.

I’m Sam the Monkey, I hang around,
I see the town I start to pound.
I’m Sam the Monkey, I banged the drum.
Now I’m hiding when they come.

Side 1 Lyrics

Forever England

Fa la la la la, fa la la la la la la la la.

There is a corner of the windshield
Of a foreign 4 by 4 that is “Forever England”,
A ragged flag upon the door
That flutters free without the wind.

Forever England, forever free, Forever flying history.

There’s din and glare around the square,
As I stop there, the banner flies away from me,
Between a churchyard from the Normans,
And Carnegie giving books away for free.

Forever England, forever free, forever writing history.

The shades of nightclubs on the square are falling fast,
The taxis rolling home to bed.
Shrapnel in their pockets,
Sweet fog of drink around their head.

Forever England, forever free, Forgetting history.

Forever England, forever free,
I came alone but you became a home for me.

Fa la la la la, fa la la la la la la la la.
